In this mini-workshop, we will be constructing and decorating a paper parfleche modelled after a rawhide parfleche which was a large, folded, envelope-like container used by North American Plains Indians to carry their belongings when they moved to follow the buffalo across the plains. Colourful and beautifully decorated, the parfleche is considered as much a piece of art as it was a practical tool.

Supply List

• pencil, eraser

• ruler 12” or longer

• scissors

• glue stick

• plastic tub for water (like margarine or cottage cheese wide enough for widest brush)

• bone folder

• scoring tool

• paints, inks, liquid watercolours, markers, etc. – colours of your liking

• tools for mark making in a variety of sizes e.g. flat brushes, sponge brushes, twigs, chopsticks, parallel pens, broad nib pens, etc.

We will be providing the paper and bringing lots of tools for you to use, including some popsicle sticks, so don’t worry about bringing everything – we will do that!
