Monthly Meeting (In-person)
Time & Location
Date: April 2, 2025
We will be meeting at Mill Woods Seniors & Multicultural Center:
2610 Hewes Way, Edmonton, AB, T6L 0A9
Doors open at 5:30 to set up, meeting at 6-ish
This class is based on an Upright Italic using a pointed pen.
Basic strokes will be taught and used to create each letter of the alphabet. By the end of the class, we will connect letters to create words and/or phrases.
This variation based on Italic is a great hand to learn – useful on cards, writing quotes OR large bodies of text. Italic is usually done using a broad edge nib. The use of a pointed nib adds a whole new look. It can look great when accompanied with a versal. We will be covering the minuscules in this class.
We will then letter a short message inside a folded watercolour card.

Supply List
Students will need the following tools for the class
- Higgins Ink, Pelikan Sumi Ink, or Moon Palace Sumi Ink
- Straight (nib) holder
- Nikko ‘G’ nib, Blue Pumpkin nib, EF66 nib, or Hunt 56 nib
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Micron 01 black pen
The Paint Spot carries Hunt 56 nibs but please be sure to check before you go. Pen holders and nibs are available at local art stores. Exemplars and paper will be provided.
Please note that if you are new to calligraphy that a Nikko ‘G’ nib is recommended for best success.
