30th Anniversary Celebration
ECS’s 30th Anniversary celebration was a hit with guests attending from areas out-of-town such as Red Deer and St. Albert. Dr. Helen Komeniuk presented some very interesting details about the Saint John’s Bible. The calligraphy exhibit and PowerPoint presentation drew many positive comments. The winning bid for the wonderful Carrie Imai alphabet was from Gail Fournier. Congratulations, Gail! A congratulatory plaque was received from Edmonton City Councillor Mike Nickle (Mill Woods) and will be on display at the December meeting. A big thank-you to those ECS members who assisted in the preparation and set-up of this event, including Jacqueline Doll, LynnAnn Babuk, Peggy Marce, Pauline Baynes, Jeanine Alexander and Carolyn Wagner. And, thanks to all of you who attended and made our 30thAnniversary celebration a success!
Happy Anniversary card received from Julie Wildman

Flourishes are embellishments added to the basic structure of letterforms. This three-hour introductory class is suitable for beginners familiar with the Italic letterform. The workshop runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the MWSMC. According to Jacquie, “In this workshop we will explore the incredibly versatile technique of “pressure and release.” Whether your words are stacked, nestled, rocked, bounced or straight as an arrow, this technique can be applied to any style of lettering. Once you get on to this technique, you’ll use it all the time. You won’t be able to resist!” There are still a few spots left so register soon. Our Social Media Sources Are For You
The ECS Facebook page is undergoing a renovation so that we can serve you better. We will be posting and sharing images and other information about calligraphy, handwriting and lettering art. Watch for your invitation to join the group if you are a member of our past Facebook public page. And, we encourage ECS members to advertise on our website if you are teaching calligraphy and/or related arts. The cost is very reasonable at $25/year. Your name and a description of your work will be on the ECS website for one calendar year. Go to https://edmontoncalligraphicsociety.ca to check out the artists currently advertising there.
ECS Items for Sale
For those who missed the opportunity to purchase the really cool and functional ECS items at the last meeting or the anniversary event, you have another chance! We still have “Just Write” lettering books, and Saint John’s Bible art cards and prints. From the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) exhibit there are Pilot Parallel pens (green only), Pilot V pens, Derwent Watercolour pencil crayons, various markers and metallic pens, and tiles printed on Diploma Parchment which you may colour, paint and add lettering to (see photo 4 below). These items are available at the November workshops and December meeting.
“Beauty’s Awakening”
ECS members LynnAnn Babuk and Alexis Reiter were on-hand to demonstrate lettering and interact with guests at the Art Gallery of Alberta’s “Beauty’s Awakening: Drawings by the Pre-Raphaelites and their Contemporaries from the Lanigan Collection” evening reception. There will be more on this event in the December Ink Drops. The exhibit runs until January 3, 2017.
Monthly Meeting
There is no monthly meeting scheduled for November as it is a workshop month. The next meeting is scheduled for 6:45-8:45 p.m. on December 7, 2016. The theme for Letters and Lines is “Peace” and the Learn to Letter exercise that night is Cards, Calligraphy and Cookies! Come prepared to have fun making cards to send to our partners in art and to get some delicious cookies. Most of the supplies will be provided but bring a few pens and seasonal trims that you want to use.
The ECS meeting day is the first Wednesday of the month and is held in Rm 231 at Mill Woods Seniors and Multicultural Centre, 2610 Hewes Way, Edmonton. Because Rm 231 is a studio space, refreshments cannot be served. There is a wonderful conversation area outside of the room where you are welcome to bring beverages in spill-proof containers.
