APRIL MEETING
The next meeting is scheduled for April 5th at 6:45-8:45 p.m. in Room 231 at Mill Woods Seniors and Multicultural Centre, 2610 Hewes Way, Edmonton.
This month’s Letters and Lines theme is “Drips & Drops.”
The Learn to Letter exercise is Versals being taught by Pauline Baynes, so bring your monoline tools, a pencil and eraser.
Pen kits are available for $5.00 and paper will be provided if you choose not to bring some.
Fundraising Partnership a Success
The fundraising event that ECS was a part of on March 25th was a great success. There were 80 silent auction items donated by our members and friends of members, and ECS made $1000! Thank-you to all who donated items, purchased tickets, and helped with the food, set-up and take-down of the venue. And, thanks goes to Nancy and Malcolm Kellock at Expressions & Images Custom Framing Inc. for their help with the silent auction items. Did you know that ECS members receive 20% off at this excellent store? Check it out at www.expressionsandimages.com.
Annual General Meeting
This is a reminder that ECS will hold its AGM on May 3rd. Everyone is encouraged to attend and be a part of the voting process. The Lines & Letters theme is “White at Night” and the Learn to Letter instruction is Gothicized Italic.
“And the Small Become Great” Workshop
As many of you know, this spring workshop takes place May 6-7 and is being taught by LynnAnn Babuk who has graciously offered to be our guest artist. She will be teaching lettering for use in jewelry making, bookmarks, writing cards, and in other forms of art. A supply list will be forwarded to registrants and there is an additional fee of $15.00 payable to LynnAnn for specialty ordered items.
Registration is suggested as space is limited. You can register for this workshop at the April meeting or on Eventbrite.
New members are eligible for registration fee funding
through the Wendy Spiers Fund.
Check out LynnAnn doing a lettering demo and representing ECS on City TV’s Dinner Television web-program Mentors and Makers. You can find it at http://www.dinnertelevision.ca/videos/5312967657001/.
Notices
There are still ECS items for sale. Please support ECS by purchasing these unique gifts for yourself or your calligraphy friends. Lettering books ($10 each or $15 for book and pen), Art Gallery of Alberta passes, pottery pen holders, walnut ink crystals, paper and more. Shop before and after the meeting.
Do you have an art form you would like to demonstrate? The Paint Spot is hosting one to two hour mini-demos and looking for artists to demonstrate. Artists will receive a $50 gift card for facilitating. Anyone interested in taking part, contact Shelley Banks or The Paint Spot.
Take a look at the ECS Facebook page or Calligraphy in Edmonton. There are lots of interesting posts for our members and other calligraphic artists. And, it’s a great place to promote your talents.
When was the last time you perused the ECS library? We have many very good instruction books and magazines to use as references for your home practise sessions. For instance, Bound & Lettered “provides practical information on bookbinding, calligraphy, artists’ books, and papercraft.” The Letter Arts Review is “Internationally recognized as the preeminent magazine for calligraphers and lettering artists, [and] the award-winning quarterly journal will acquaint you with today’s fresh and innovative leaders as well as yesterday’s legends.” Take a look at these two resources and many others at the next meeting. Please note: all loaned library materials must be returned at the May meeting but can be signed out again when meetings resume after the summer break.
Thanks to Jeanine Alexander, ECS has been given the right to use Write Now: The Getty-Dubay Program for Handwriting Success. For more information on the program developed by these two talented ladies, go to http://www.handwritingsuccess.com/italic-handwriting-series.php.
Volunteer Appreciation Night
ECS is showing its appreciation by planning a workshop night for its members on June 7th. Sally Towers-Sybblis will facilitate a mini-book workshop that would normally cost $75 per person. ECS is subsidizing this workshop so the cost will be only $20/person to attend. Light snacks will be served to keep up your energy for the evening. For more information on Sally, go to https://sallytowerssybblis.com/. Register for this fun-filled evening very soon as there are limited seats.
LetterWorks Art Conference 2017
The 36th International Lettering Arts Conference will be held at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah from June 24 to July 1. Over four hundred artists, educators, entrepreneurs, historians, authors, students and hobbyists are expected to be in attendance. ECS has again been asked to promote our organization by contributing handmade items for distribution to the conference participants. Our past efforts in this initiative were met with great appreciation and compliments from the conference organizers. The Executive Team is looking for volunteers who want to participate in creating promotional items to send to this conference – date to be determined. It will be an inspirational afternoon of crafting. If you want to join in, let an Executive Team member know. For more information on the conference, go to http://letterworks.org/.
