Happy 30th Year! Our New Location!

ECS Members, please note that the new location for our meetings is Room 229 in the Millwoods Seniors & Multicultural Centre, upstairs in the new Millwoods Library at 2610 Hewes Way. Our first gathering is also on a NEW DAY, Wednesday, September 7 at 6:45.

Letters & Lines

We’ll begin each meeting with a new component called “Lines & Letters”, where we ask you to bring a piece of lettering you have begun and are working on, or have finished, and attach it to our fabric display wall (thank you Pauline Baynes). It will be an opportunity for us to share in the lettering process, discuss challenges and successes, and learn from each other. This month’s theme, to reflect our move to a new location and the start of our 30th year, is “Movin’ and Grovin’” and you are encouraged to letter on an 8 inch x 8 inch paper. Of course, you may bring lettering on any size, but the small format is good for those who might like having less area to fill. Please feel welcome to bring any practice sheets, journals, or projects of any size to share.

Membership and Workshops

At our first meeting, a table will be available for renewing your membership ($40) and another for signing up for a workshop. The first guest instructor is Alice Young, who is here from Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island. She will be giving a free session on the Pilot Parallel Pen on Friday, September 16, but you must sign up on Eventbrite. On Saturday and Sunday, September 17/18, she will instruct us on her ‘Gentle Gothics’ lettering. You may register at our first meeting…there are only a few spots left.

Jacquie Myers will be giving a Flourishing workshop ($40) on Nov. 4 and a two-day workshop on ‘Graphite Calligraphy’ ($150) on Nov. 5/6. You may also register for these classes at our Sept. 7 meeting.

Tools of the Trade

The program for the evening will be “Tools of the Trade”. You will have the opportunity to move among four different stations to learn about special materials and paper, and experiment with them. When you have finished, you will combine your papers and create a small booklet to take home.

Calligraphy Supplies Estate Sale

Please read the attached information about the huge sale of calligraphy, art, and craft materials and supplies from the estate of one of our former members, Wendy Spiers.

Tues., Sept. 13, Wed., Sept.14, and Thurs., Sept. 15 from 6-8 PM. Her family has very kindly decided to donate half of the proceeds to the ECS, in support of our scholarship fund, so we hope you will bring your wallets and have fun. This is advertised to our members first, so you will have a fantastic opportunity to find items you need and want!
